NÄRVIJOKI
Närvijoki is a village in the city of Kurikka, South Ostrobothnia, located in the area of the former municipality of Jurva. The village has about 200 residents, but around one tenth of them belong to the city of Närpes. Even after more than 300 years, this small group of residents still officially belongs to the village's original large parish.
Today, the village is characterized by its diverse business activity, including furniture manufacturing, bus transport, forestry machinery, and excavator services. Although the village has lost its shops and school, entrepreneurship has taken their place.
There are now sawmill and construction businesses, online stores, farm tourism. Agriculture and forestry continue to play an important role in employment. Strawberry farming from the Närpes side has expanded into the village as well. During the summer, more than a hundred foreign pickers work on the strawberry fields.
Strong entrepreneurship is essential for the future of the village. Närvijoki has good connections to the municipal center and especially via Highway 8 to Vaasa. Residents of Vaasa have even purchased vacant homes in the village. Families with children who have moved in reinforce faith in the village's future. The river brings a welcome variation to the otherwise flat landscape.
LOCATION
Närvijoki is the westernmost village in Kurikka. The distance to the Kurikka city center is 42 km, to Seinäjoki 72 km, and to Vaasa 57 km. The Närpiö River flows through the village, featuring several rapids. The river level is 20 meters lower at the downstream end of the village than at the upstream end. This elevation difference enabled a wide variety of businesses to be established along the river as early as the 19th century.
NÄRVIJOKI RECREATION AREA
The Village Association maintains the recreation area through volunteer work. The area is mainly open during the summer season.
Facilities include an outdoor swimming pool, smoke sauna, wood-heated sauna, grill kiosk, accommodation options, village club house, playground, sand volleyball court, barbecue hut, scenic viewpoint hill, and a covered dance pavilion / multipurpose hall.
